| Cortina History |
The Ford Cortina was launched in 1962, and
survived with three different floorpans and a few facelifts into 1982. It
was replaced by the Sierra which was basically the Cortina Mark VI but Ford
decided to change the name. The Cortina was a big hit throughout its life
and along with the Escort helped to make Ford UK the success it is today.
Cortinas have never really been taken seriously, and Mark III, IV, and V models
are still not considered to be anything special by most people.
The
Cortina Mark III was produced from 1970 to 1976, and the "coke bottle" styling
covered a brand new floorpan and suspension package that survived right through
to the end of Cortina production in 1982.
My
Cortina was a 1974 Mark III 1600cc in Daytona Yellow. I got it from my friend
Alan, as his parents were sick of it sitting on their driveway whilst he
drove around in his flamed Mark V. A notional sum changed hands, the
handbrake and clutched were unsiezed, the car push-started, and I was a
Ford man!
The Cortina was a great car to drive, and was smooth and responsive although
obviously not that fast. Mechanically the main problem was a starter motor
that refused to work, and the engine needing regular tune-ups to maintain
the performance. Other than that it was a good car, roomy and
comfortable.
When it came time
to get rid of the Cortina I was in the process of moving house and the car
didn't have an MOT, so I donated it to the owners club, who have hopefully
made good use of it.
